Small Block Chevy Buyer’s Guide: 350 vs 383 vs 406

Sixty-plus years after its introduction, the small block Chevy is still the first engine most classic builders consider — and for good reason: nobody else makes 300–500+ horsepower this cheaply, this simply, or with this much parts support. But “small block Chevy” covers a lot of ground, and the three most common configurations — 350, 383 and 406 — suit very different builds. This guide is how we walk customers through the choice at our Kessel workshop.
Short answer: the 350 is the value and originality pick, the 383 is the best all-rounder for street power, and the 406 is for builders who want maximum small-block displacement without stepping up to a big block.
Why the Small Block Chevy Still Wins in 2026
GM built the SBC from 1955 to 2003 in passenger cars — over 100 million units. That scale means: any part you need is a day away, any problem you hit has been solved by someone, and the engine bolts into thousands of chassis with off-the-shelf mounts. In Europe specifically, carbureted small blocks are the friendliest route through classic-vehicle registration — no EFI emissions plumbing, tunable with hand tools.

Which one should you buy?

Restoring a numbers-matching classic or building on a budget? The 350. Nothing is cheaper, and 300 honest horsepower transforms a classic without hurting its character.

Crate, Donor or Rebuild?
Three routes, three risk profiles:

Common Mistakes We See

Buying displacement before supporting parts. A 406 on stock heads and a stock converter underperforms a well-specced 383.

Is a 383 stroker reliable? With a quality rotating assembly and proper clearancing, yes — strokers have been mainstream for 40 years. Reliability problems come from cheap cranks and skipped machine work, not the displacement.
What’s the biggest small block Chevy? 406 cubic inches is the practical ceiling on production-style small block architecture; beyond that, builders move to big blocks or aftermarket blocks.
