Important Fitment & Compatibility Notes
Hood Clearance: The aluminum high-rise intake manifold and Holley 800 CFM carburetor add significant height over a small-block or low-rise big-block. A 2-inch cowl-induction hood is strongly recommended for 1967–1969 Camaros, 1968–1972 Novas, and any vehicle with a flat hood. 1970 Chevelles with the factory cowl-induction hood have adequate clearance.
Cooling Requirements: The 454 LS6 generates substantial heat. A minimum 4-core copper/brass or aluminum radiator with a high-flow mechanical fan or dual electric fans is required. Do not attempt to cool a 450 HP big-block with a small-block radiator — overheating will result.
Transmission & Driveline: The TH350 is marginal behind a 500 lb-ft big-block. We strongly recommend a TH400, 4L80E, Muncie M22, or TKO 600 transmission. The rear axle should be a 12-bolt or Ford 9-inch with 31-spline axles minimum.
Frame & Suspension: The 454 weighs approximately 150 lbs more than a small-block. Factory big-block springs and sway bars are required. Subframe connectors are strongly recommended on unibody cars (Camaro, Nova) to prevent chassis flex.
Brakes: A 450 HP big-block demands modern stopping power. Front disc brakes with at least 11-inch rotors are mandatory. Power brakes with a vacuum reservoir are recommended due to the solid-lifter cam’s reduced manifold vacuum at idle.
Fuel System: The Holley 800 CFM double-pumper requires a minimum 6 PSI fuel pressure at WOT. A 1/2-inch fuel line from tank to carburetor is recommended. An electric fuel pump with a regulator is preferred over a mechanical pump for consistent pressure.
Installation & Break-In Notes
Flat-Tappet / Solid-Lifter Cam Break-In: If selecting the factory-correct solid-lifter camshaft, proper break-in is critical. Use conventional 20W-50 motor oil with a high-ZDDP break-in additive (such as Comp Cams #159) for the first 500 miles. Adjust valve lash to 0.026-inch intake / 0.032-inch exhaust cold before initial start-up.
Break-In Procedure: Start the engine and immediately bring RPM to 2,500–3,000. Hold for 20–30 minutes while varying RPM and monitoring oil pressure (minimum 40 PSI hot) and coolant temperature. Do not idle for extended periods during break-in. After break-in, allow the engine to cool completely, change oil and filter, and re-check valve lash.
Timing: Set initial timing to 12–14 degrees BTDC with 34–38 degrees total mechanical advance by 3000 RPM. Disconnect and plug vacuum advance during timing setup. Reconnect vacuum advance to manifold vacuum (not ported) after timing is set for improved idle quality and part-throttle response.
Spark Plug Gap: 0.035 inch with non-projected-nose spark plugs. Use AC Delco R45TS or equivalent. Colder plugs (R44TS) recommended for high-RPM or nitrous use.
Carburetor Tuning: The Holley 800 CFM double-pumper is tuned for sea-level operation. For high-altitude or extreme climate operation, jetting adjustments may be required. The electric choke is not included — cold starts require 2–3 pumps of the throttle.
