383 Stroker Crate Engines — Big Torque from the Classic Small-Block
Chevrolet never built a factory 383 — the engine was invented by hot rodders. Decades ago, a clever engine builder realised that machining the main journals of a 400 small-block crankshaft to fit a 350 block added roughly 33 cubic inches for almost no extra cost. The 3.75-inch stroke (versus the 350’s 3.48) combined with a 0.030 overbore produces 383 cubic inches — and a massive jump in low-end torque. The recipe became so popular that GM itself now builds 383 stroker crate engines with brand-new blocks, forged cranks and factory engineering — all the torque of the hot-rod original with none of the junkyard roulette.
At NH Race Engine in Kessel, the Netherlands, we supply 383 stroker crate engines for sale across Europe — from the torque-first HT383 for trucks and heavy classics to the 450 hp SP383 with Fast Burn aluminium heads and EFI. Every engine is inspected by our own builders, backed by a 12-month warranty, and shipped crated, insured and tracked to your door.
Our 383 Stroker Lineup
Three factory-engineered specifications — every one built on a brand-new cast-iron block with 4-bolt mains, forged steel crankshaft and hydraulic roller cam. Want something wilder — a 6,500-rpm street weapon or a 500 hp custom stroker? Our engine building team builds it on our own machines and dyno-proves it before shipping.

383 Stroker vs 350 — Is the Extra Stroke Worth It?
The question we answer most at the workshop counter. A 350 makes its power up high and loves to rev; a 383 makes its torque down low — the SP383 delivers its 445 lb-ft peak at just 4,600 rpm, and the HT383E hits 444 lb-ft at only 3,000 rpm, right where street cars and trucks actually drive. Seat-of-the-pants, a 383 feels like an engine 100 hp stronger in everyday driving, because torque is what you feel. It costs a little more than a 350 and revs a little less freely — for a light weekend toy the 350 is plenty; for anything heavy, anything towed, or anyone who drives with their right foot, the 383 is worth every euro. Popular 383 Stroker Applications
- Classic trucks: C10, K5 Blazer and square-body pickups — the HT383E was engineered by GM as the definitive half-ton truck repower
- Heavy classics: Chevelle, Impala, Monte Carlo, El Camino — torque moves weight, and 444 lb-ft moves it effortlessly
- Street/strip cars: the SP383’s 435–450 hp runs deep into the 11s in a typical muscle car — Hot Rod’s dyno test even saw nearly 450 lb-ft at the crank [stock form]
- Pro-touring builds: EFI SP383 + overdrive transmission = classic looks, modern drivability
- Kit cars & cobras: brutal torque in a lightweight chassis — addictive
Pair your stroker with a rebuilt gearbox from our transmission rebuilds programme — the extra torque deserves a transmission that can hold it — and have the complete package fitted by our installation & fitting team.

Frequently Asked Questions — 383 Stroker
“Stroker” means the crankshaft stroke has been increased beyond stock. The classic recipe: a 350 block bored 0.030-over (4.030-inch bore) with a 3.75-inch stroke crank from a 400 small-block = 382.6 ci, rounded to 383. Modern GM crate 383s use a 4.005-inch bore with a 3.80-inch stroke for the same result — with brand-new, purpose-engineered components throughout.
Yes — when built correctly, as these factory engines are. The horror stories come from poorly balanced home builds with clearancing mistakes. GM’s crate 383s use a brand-new 4-bolt-main block, forged crank and heavy-duty rods, all externally balanced and factory-tested. Treat the redline with respect (5,000 rpm on the HT383E, 6,000 on the SP383) and it’s as durable as any small-block.
The HT383E (9.4:1 compression) runs on regular 95 RON. The SP383 (up to 9.9:1) needs premium 98 RON. On dyno-tuned builds we calibrate to the fuel you’ll actually buy.
Yes — externally a 383 is identical to any small-block Chevy: same mounts, same bellhousing, same accessories. One important detail: 383s are externally balanced, so you must use the correct 400-style harmonic balancer and flexplate/flywheel (the crate engines ship with the right flexplate for automatics). We’ll confirm everything for your application before you order.
In-stock strokers ship from Kessel within 48 hours, crated, insured and tracked. Typical transit: 1–3 business days in the Benelux, 3–7 days elsewhere in Europe. Freight depends on destination — request a quote and it will include the delivered price, not just the engine.
Every 383 we sell carries our 12-month NH Race Engine warranty, handled in our own workshop — plus GM’s 24-month / 80,000-km limited crate-engine warranty where applicable. Register your engine on our warranty page after delivery.
