Chevrolet Performance 502 HO 461 HP Long Block Crate Engine – 19433157
502 Big Block Engines — Chevrolet 8.2L V8 Crate Motors
The biggest rat Chevy ever built. The 502 big block engine is the largest-displacement V8 ever offered by Chevrolet — an 8.2-liter monster that takes the legendary Mark IV architecture to its absolute limit. With a massive 4.466-inch bore and 4.000-inch stroke, the 502 delivers thundering torque and effortless horsepower that no small-block or even a 454 can match. At NH Race Engines, we build and ship 502 big block crate engines from our Netherlands warehouse for classic muscle car restorations, Pro-Touring builds, street rods, and heavy-duty truck repowers across the EU. From the factory-style 502 HO at 450 HP to all-out 600+ HP stroker builds, every engine is machined, blueprinted, dyno-tested, and delivered ready to dominate.
Why the 502 Big Block Is the Ultimate Chevy V8
The 502 cubic inch big block was born in the 1990s when GM Performance Parts realized the Mark IV platform still had untapped potential. By opening the bore to 4.466 inches — the maximum safe overbore for a standard big-block Chevy — and retaining the proven 4.000-inch stroke, Chevrolet created an 8.2-liter engine that made the 454 look modest.
Unlike the 454, which was a production passenger car and truck engine constrained by emissions and fuel-economy regulations, the 502 was designed from day one as a performance crate engine. That means:
- 4-bolt main block with priority main oiling — stronger than factory 454 blocks
- Hydraulic roller camshaft — modern reliability with big-block attitude
- Aluminum oval-port heads — better flow, less weight, superior cooling
- 9.6:1 compression — pump-gas friendly while still making serious power
- 502 cubic inches — 48 more than a 454, 75 more than a 427
The result is an engine that idles like a gentleman and accelerates like a freight train. At NH Race Engines, we build every 502 big block crate engine with that same philosophy — massive displacement, modern internals, and old-school big-block presence.
502 Big Block Engines We Build at NH Race Engines
Our 502 big block engine lineup covers street cruisers, drag-strip monsters, and everything in between:
502 HO — 450 HP Street Cruiser: The classic GM Performance Parts recipe. Hydraulic roller cam, aluminum oval-port heads, 9.6:1 compression, and a Holley 850 CFM carburetor on a dual-plane intake. Makes 450 HP at 5200 RPM and 550 lb-ft of torque at 3500 RPM. Perfect for Chevelle, Camaro, and C10 builds that need big-block torque with pump-gas reliability.
502 Ram Jet — 502 HP Fuel Injected: The factory fuel-injected 502 with Ram Jet intake and port fuel injection. 502 HP at 5200 RPM with modern drivability, cold-start manners, and altitude compensation. For builders who want big-block sound with EFI convenience.
502 Stroker — 540 Cubic Inches: Bored and stroked to 540 ci (4.500" bore x 4.250" stroke) with a 4340 forged crank and H-beam rods. Delivers 600+ HP and 650+ lb-ft with a hydraulic roller cam and aluminum rectangular-port heads. The ultimate big-block for Pro-Touring Camaros, Chevelles, and street rods.
502 Truck / Tow — 400 HP Torque Monster: Built for C20, C30, Suburban, and motorhome applications. Mild hydraulic cam, 8.75:1 compression, and massive low-end torque for towing, hauling, and highway cruising. Front-sump oil pan and truck accessory drive.
502 Marine — Offshore Performance: Salt-water-ready 502 big blocks with marine camshaft profiles, brass freeze plugs, sealed ignition, and closed cooling compatibility. For offshore boats, jet boats, and inboard ski boats that demand big-block torque.

Ideal Applications for 502 Big Block Engines
The 502 big block is the ultimate powerplant for builders who refuse to compromise on displacement:
1964–1972 Chevrolet Chevelle & El Camino: The 502 drops into any big-block Chevelle chassis with factory frame stands. The extra 48 cubic inches over a 454 means more torque everywhere — off the line, through the mid-range, and at highway speed. A 2-inch cowl hood is recommended for intake clearance.
1967–1969 Chevrolet Camaro: The ultimate first-gen Camaro engine swap. The 502 transforms any Camaro into a tire-shredding Pro-Touring machine. Requires big-block heater hose routing, subframe connectors, and upgraded brakes. The torque will overwhelm a stock 10-bolt rear end — a 12-bolt or Ford 9-inch is mandatory.
1968–1972 Chevrolet Nova: The compact Nova with a 502 is the definition of a sleeper. Our rear-sump pan clears Nova crossmembers. The engine bay is tight, but the 502 fits with minimal firewall modification. Be prepared to upgrade the rear suspension — 550 lb-ft will twist a stock leaf-spring setup into pretzels.
1967–1991 C10 / C20 / C30 / K10 / K20 Trucks: Classic Chevy pickups and Suburbans that need serious towing power. The 502 delivers massive low-end torque for hauling trailers, boats, and campers. Front-sump oil pan and truck accessory drive available. Factory big-block springs and sway bars required.
Street Rods & T-Buckets: The 502 is the modern replacement for the old 392 Hemi and 454 big blocks in traditional hot rods. Compact enough for most 1932–1940 Ford chassis with the torque to move anything on wheels. The aluminum heads save 60+ lbs over iron heads.
Classic Offshore Boats: Cigarette, Donzi, Formula, and Bertram hulls that demand big-block torque. Marine 502 builds with closed cooling, brass freeze plugs, and sealed ignition for salt-water durability. The 8.2L displacement provides the torque needed to push heavy offshore hulls onto plane.
Important Fitment & Compatibility Notes
Hood Clearance: The 502 uses a tall-deck big-block architecture (10.200" deck height vs. 9.800" for a standard 454). This means the intake manifold, valve covers, and air cleaner sit approximately 0.4 inches higher than a Mark IV 454. A 2-inch or 3-inch cowl-induction hood is strongly recommended for 1967–1969 Camaros, 1968–1972 Novas, and any vehicle with a flat hood.
Cooling Requirements: The 502 generates significant heat at 8.2 liters. A minimum 4-core aluminum radiator with a high-flow mechanical fan or dual 16-inch electric fans is required. A high-capacity water pump and 180°F thermostat are recommended. Do not attempt to cool a 502 with a small-block radiator.
Transmission & Driveline: The 502's 550 lb-ft of torque will destroy a TH350 or 10-bolt rear end. We strongly recommend a TH400, 4L80E, TKO 600, or Tremec Magnum transmission. The rear axle should be a 12-bolt with 33-spline axles, a Ford 9-inch with 35-spline axles, or a Dana 60. A 3.73 or 4.10 gear ratio is ideal for street use.
Frame & Suspension: The 502 weighs approximately 680 lbs dressed — 30 lbs more than a 454 due to the taller deck and larger bore. Factory big-block springs, sway bars, and subframe connectors are mandatory on unibody cars (Camaro, Nova, Chevelle). Tubular control arms and coil-over shocks are recommended for Pro-Touring builds.
Brakes: A 450–600 HP 502 demands modern stopping power. Front disc brakes with 12-inch rotors and four-piston calipers are the minimum. Power brakes with a hydro-boost or vacuum reservoir are strongly recommended.
Fuel System: The 502 HO requires a minimum 7 PSI fuel pressure at WOT. A 1/2-inch fuel line from tank to carburetor is recommended. An electric fuel pump with a regulator is preferred. For EFI builds, a high-pressure in-tank pump with 58 PSI and 255 LPH flow rate is required.
